You keep swallowing, trying to move that little ball in your throat. No matter how much you try, it is still here, so you swallow again and again, beginning to feel little panicky. It is still there even after you drink something, clear your throat or swallow hard.
Known medically as globes, many things cause this uncomfortable feeling. The small muscular opening in the lower part of the throat becomes tense. The tension in the throat tells your brain something is lodges there, even when nothing is.
Many things can cause this uncomfortable feeling:
- Stress, anxiety and depression.
- Medications of high blood pressure or depression.
- Antihistamines.
- A recent cough or cold.
- A hiatus hernia.
- Being overweight.
- Acid indigestion, particularly when caused by the overeating of fatty food or chocolate.
If there is no medical cause, you might try:
- Changing medications.
- Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.
- Using a nasal spray filled with warm salt water.
- Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on lozenges that stimulate saliva.
- Avoid heartburn. Don’t go to bed on a full stomach.
- Avoid alcohol, chocolate and fatty meals.
- Lose weight if you need to.
