An ingrown nail occurs when the toenail – usually on a big toe – grows into the soft tissue at the side of the nail.
- Soak your foot in warm water to soften the nail. Dry and thyen insert a tiny wisp of sterile cotton between the edge of the nail and the toe.
- Apply some antiseptic to the painful tissue, particularly if it is inflamed.
- Avoid pointed toe shoes or shoes that are too tight. They not only add to the problem, they probably are the cause of the problem.
- Never cut your toenails too short. Cut straight across with a nail clipper made specifically for toenails.
- Watch for infection. An infection in the feet can lead to more serious problems, particularly for diabetics.
