Hepatitis is and inflammation in the liver. Three major causes of hepatitis are TYPE A and TYPE B viruses, alcohol and drugs. Rarer type includes infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus, as well as some other specific viral infections.
Type A is spread primarily through faecal oral contact, through water and food borne routes. Ingestion of contaminated raw shellfish can be responsible.
Type B is transmitted through the blood. Transfusion of contaminated blood or blood product is one usual source, although the sharing of needles by drug user is also responsible, as well as some forms of sexual activity. This disease affects approximately 85 per cent of homosexual community.
Infectious hepatitis is contagious two to three weeks before and one week after the appearance of jaundice.
- Avoid all fats, alcohol, sugar and highly processed foods.
- Hands and all clothing should be washed often and bathrooms should be decontaminated frequently.
- Do not eat any raw fish or shellfish.
- A hepatitis B vaccine should be taken by all homosexuals, drug users and all those who work in the dental or medical professionals.
