You’d love to eat ice- cream but you know it will just make you sick. The same goes for a cheese pizza and cream cheese in your sandwich. Lactose intolerance makes anything made with milk give you enough gas to power a small car.
Your small intestine doesn’t produce sufficient amount of lactase, an enzyme you need to digest lactose, the natural sugar found in dairy products.
Most adult after age 20 suffer from some degree of lactose intolerance.
- Limit your dairy products. You may be able to have some of your favorites a few times of week without difficulty.
- Supplement your diet with calcium. East sardines with the bones, spinach or broccoli.
- If you do drink milk, be sure to take it with other foods.
- Try yoghurt. It doesn’t have the same lactose content of milk but use non fat or low fat yoghurt.
- Experiment with cheese, some have less lactose than others, such as swiss of cheddar.
- Lactose is used as filler in some medications. If you have difficulty, read labels or ask your pharmacist about your medications.
