They usually aren’t painful but they can be annoying. Hiccups are more common in men and follow an irritation of the nerves that control the muscles used for breathing. Unless the hiccups are prolonged, they usually go away in few hours on their own and are nothing to be concerned about.
- Treatment that focus on adjusting the level of carbon dioxide include holding one’s breath, breathing into a paper bag, drinking a glass of water rapidly and pulling the tongue forward with the fingers.
- If you want a more novel approach, try eating one teaspoonful of dry sugar or gently inhaling a little pepper –enough to make you sneeze. Sneezing usually adjusts the spastic contractions of the diaphragm.
