FROSTIBITE CARE

FROSTIBITE CARE

When the body needs to conserve heat, blood flow is shifted away from the skin, where much heat would be lost through radiation. This lack of blood causes pain and if the blood flow is significantly reduces for a long enough period of time, gangrene may result from this prolonged poor circulation.

  • Find shelter from the wind; wind chill can be significant factor in frostbite.
  • Don’t use a heat-lamp or camp –fire to rewarm. Frostbitten skin is easily burned.
  • Don’t rub with snow, as this just causes friction.
  • Keep your head covered. Heat loss from the head accounts for a major portion of the easily lost body heat.
  • Drinking alcohol actually causes you to lose more heat.
  • Keep moving.
  • If you are stranded, stay with your vehicle.
  • Rewarm nay frostbitten parts with warm water as soon as possible.
