How many times have you walked into the edge of that darn coffee table?
Unless you just stay in bed every day, you are bound to bruise yourself from to time.
When underlying tissue is damaged without breaking the skin, black and blue marks will result because blood collects underneath the skin.
- As soon as possible, apply an ice pack to constrict the ruptured ends of the tiny blood vessels in the area. Remove after 20 minutes, allow the area to rewarm and then reapply the ice pack.
- After 24 hours, use heat to dilate the blood vessels and improve circulation to the area.
- Add 500 mg vitamin C to your daily diet and you will be less prone to bruising when you do have an occasional bump. Oranges and grapefruits are good source.
- Avoid excessive aspirin.
- Grate a turnip; apply it to the bruise for 15 to 30 minutes after the ice. It is thought that this will speed up the removal of the blood from the area.
- You can also bind the inside of a banana peel to the area to reduce the pain and lessen the probability of discoloration and then proverbial steak.
