If someone you care about appears to be showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease, they should get a medical evaluation. Not everything that appears to be this disease is. Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible decrease in memory, usually beginning in the fifth or sixth decade. It is a degenerative disease of the brain which is characterised by mental deterioration that interferes with the person’s ability to function. Memory loss, severe mood swings, personality changes, disoriented perceptions of space and time inability to concentrate and communicate follow. Ultimately the individual’s health will progressively deteriorate until they are totally incapacitated.
- Orient the person to time and place daily.
- Control activities so that the individual does not wander away.
- Provide a nutritious diet, Alzheimer’s suffers often forget to eat.
Recent studies indicate that the more mentally active you are throughout life, the less likely you are to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The synapses, the connection that allow one brain cell to communicate with another, are always changing as a result input. Some synapses with new learning, some weaker with disuse. Unused connections disappear while new one occur with the information of new memories. The more exercises a person has, the more connection are formed between brain cells.
It is recommended that everyone:
- Read something every day.
- Write something every day
- Engage in challenging hobby.
- Join club with people who have common interest.
- Choose physical activities that are mentally challenging.
- Stay involved with others, meet new people, travel, find ways to be helpful to others.
